About INFERGEN® (Interferon alfacon-1)

How does INFERGEN Work?

No one knows exactly how interferons, including INFERGEN, work but research shows that all interferons:
  • Help the body's natural immune system to fight the hepatitis C virus
  • Slow down or stop the growth of the hepatitis C virus
  • Help stop the virus from causing more damage to the liver.

Natural interferon is a protein that your body makes to fight viral infections like hepatitis C. Interferons help lower the levels of HCV in your body.1,2

INFERGEN is a different kind of interferon. It is a bioengineered interferon. INFERGEN is produced to be similar to natural interferon in the way it fights HCV.

Because it is a bioengineered interferon, it is also different from other interferons currently used to treat hepatitis C. INFERGEN has been studied in patients new to HCV treatment and in those for whom treatment was not effective or who have detectable virus after a course of pegylated interferon and ribavirin.3

All medications have side effects. Many of them fade as your body gets used to them. Learn about managing the side effects of INFERGEN.
