Frequently Asked Questions about INFERGEN

If you have questions, see if they're already answered in the Frequently Asked Questions about INFERGEN.
If you're caring for a loved one or friend with hepatitis C, you should know that it can be cured with the right treatment options.

For most people infected with HCV, the first treatment plan includes the medication pegylated interferon and ribavirin. If pegylated interferon and ribavirin therapy is working against HCV, the amount of virus in the blood drops 100-fold after 12 weeks.1

This is called achieving viral negativity, or having so little virus in the blood that it is undetectable. However, only 50% of those who take interferon achieve viral negativity, or they achieve it temporarily and then the virus returns after treatment ends.2

A complete plan includes the next step: INFERGEN® (Interferon alfacon-1)

If your loved one or friend doesn't reach viral negativity after 12 weeks of therapy, it may be time for a different plan. INFERGEN, a different kind of interferon that is proven effective in people who have taken other interferons that were not effective,3 may be part of the plan.

Your loved one's plan for success with hepatitis C treatment is important because it means reducing the HCV level:4
  • Before HCV harms the liver more than it already has
  • Before damage to the liver becomes irreversible
  • Before the HCV level can rise further

Managing side effects

Because all interferons cause side effects, your loved one may experience them. Some may happen in the first hour or two and be over with quickly. Others can last several hours or more.

You should always contact your healthcare professional to report any side effects or discomfort. You can help your loved one manage the most common side effects of INFERGEN. Print a copy of the guide below.

Taking INFERGEN® (Interferon alfacon-1) as prescribed is important

This is one way to give INFERGEN treatment the best chance of success. It's important for your loved one to take every dose of INFERGEN as prescribed. Missing doses or taking the wrong dose can make INFERGEN therapy less effective.
